Can you rack a used pallet? The honest answer
This is the question we are asked most often and the one where a supplier is most tempted to give a comfortable answer.

In short
Grade A reclaimed pallets — original, unrepaired stringers, full deck — can be racked, subject to your own rack engineering sign-off. Grade B — with a plugged or companion stringer — should be floor or block stacked instead.
Racking is the hardest load case a pallet faces: it spans open air, supported only at two edges, often for months. It is also where creep, the slow deflection of wood under sustained load, does its work.

Why racking is the hard case
Three load conditions, three very different numbers.
Static — sitting on a flat floor. Everything is supported, the deck is in compression, and the number is large.
Dynamic — being carried by a forklift. Supported at the fork positions, deck in bending, plus acceleration and shock. Typically half the static figure.
Racked — spanning between two beams with nothing underneath. The stringers are beams carrying the whole load across an unsupported span. Typically a third or less of static.
A supplier quoting one unqualified capacity number is quoting static, which is the least useful of the three. See load capacity and ratings.
Creep: the part that catches people
Wood under sustained bending load does not simply deflect and stop. It keeps deflecting, slowly, for as long as the load is applied. This is creep, and it is why a pallet that looked fine on day one can be visibly sagging by month six.
It is worse when the wood is wet, worse at higher temperatures, and worse the closer the load is to the pallet's short-term capacity.
The practical consequence: for long-term storage, derate substantially from the published racked figure. A pallet holding a load for a week and a pallet holding the same load for eight months are not doing the same job.
Why Grade B is a no
A companion stringer — a matched piece glued and nailed alongside a cracked original along its full length — restores most of the original strength. Most is the operative word.
In floor stacking, where the stringer is fully supported, 'most' is entirely sufficient. In racking, where the stringer is the spanning member and the load is sustained, the margin that 'most' leaves out is the margin you were relying on.
There is a second problem: consistency. Grade B is defined by *permitted* defects, not by a measured capacity. Two Grade B pallets can differ considerably. You cannot engineer around a population you cannot characterise.
So our answer is Grade A for racking, and we would rather lose the order than give a comfortable answer here.
The cheaper answer nobody suggests
Before upgrading a whole fleet to Grade A or to new builds, consider changing the rack rather than the pallet.
Rack decking — wire mesh, solid steel or timber panels laid across the beams — removes the unsupported span entirely. The pallet is now fully supported, which turns a racked load case back into something close to a static one. It also catches anything that falls through, which is a safety benefit in its own right.
For most operations this is dramatically cheaper than upgrading every pallet, and it is a one-time cost against a recurring one. It also lets you run Grade B throughout, which compounds the saving.
The other option is a third front-to-back rail, which halves the span. Less effective than full decking, considerably cheaper.
Where our responsibility ends
We will give you honest indicative figures, grade consistently to a written definition, and build to a specification.
We will not certify that a given pallet is safe in your specific rack. That depends on your rack design, your beam spacing, your load, your handling and your inspection regime — none of which we control, and all of which matter more than the pallet.
If the load is heavy, valuable or stored overhead, get an engineered rating. Any supplier who tells you otherwise is transferring risk to you while sounding reassuring.
