Blue stain is not rot, and rejecting it costs you money
Every year somebody rejects a load of perfectly sound pallets because the pine has gone grey-blue. It is one of the better bargains in this industry.

In short
Blue stain is a fungal discolouration of pine sapwood. It feeds on sugars in the sap, not on the cellulose and lignin that give wood its strength, so it does not meaningfully weaken the timber.
It looks like damage, which is why blue-stained stock is frequently discounted. For structural purposes that discount is close to free money.

What it is
Blue stain — sometimes called sap stain — is caused by fungi that colonise the sapwood of freshly cut softwood, particularly pine. They metabolise the stored sugars in the sap and produce dark pigmented hyphae that show through as blue-grey or black streaks.
Critically, these organisms do not digest cellulose or lignin. Those are the structural components of wood. The fungus is eating the pantry, not the walls.
It happens fast — often within days of felling in warm weather — and it is essentially permanent. It cannot be washed or planed out of anything but the surface.
How to tell it from decay
This is the part worth knowing, because decay *does* matter and the two are confused constantly.
- Colour. Blue stain is grey-blue to black, in streaks that follow the grain. Decay is more often brown, orange or bleached white, in patches.
- Texture. Blue-stained wood feels like wood. Decayed wood is soft, punky or crumbly.
- The probe test. Push a screwdriver or a knife point into the suspect area. Sound wood resists and splinters. Decayed wood accepts the point easily and crumbles.
- Weight and sound. Advanced decay makes wood lighter and duller when dropped.
- Location. Blue stain is a sapwood phenomenon and often runs deep into the board. Decay usually starts where water sat — end grain, notches, the underside of a bottom board.
If it fails the probe test, it is not blue stain and we would not sell it to you.
When it genuinely matters
Three cases, and none of them are structural.
Appearance. Retail floor-ready displays and anything a customer sees. Here it is a legitimate reason to specify clean stock.
Light-coloured product in contact. Staining can transfer under moisture. This is more of a concern with oak tannins than with blue stain, but it is worth checking with white cartons or bagged goods.
Customer specification. If your customer's receiving standard rejects discoloured wood, then it matters regardless of the engineering, and arguing the point is not a good use of anybody's time.
For everything else — industrial freight, floor stacking, one-way shipping — it is irrelevant.
The commercial angle
Because blue stain looks like damage, blue-stained stock frequently carries a discount that has nothing to do with performance. In a market where reclaimed pallets are already the value option, this is a discount on a discount.
If your application is industrial and your receiving standard does not mention appearance, ask specifically whether discounted discoloured stock is available. It is a genuine and underused lever.
The same logic runs through recycled vs new pallets: most of what makes reclaimed cheap is cosmetic, and most operations are paying for appearance they do not need.
