In short
Plastic pallets are moulded HDPE or PP platforms used where hygiene, consistency or closed-loop return economics beat the cost advantage of wood. They need no ISPM-15 treatment, survive wash-down, and hold dimensional tolerance tightly enough for automated handling.
They cost roughly four to ten times a reclaimed wood pallet up front. That maths only works in a controlled loop where the pallet reliably comes back.

Where plastic genuinely wins
- Wash-down and hygiene environments. Meat, dairy, produce, pharmaceutical. Plastic can be pressure-washed and sanitised; wood cannot, meaningfully.
- Closed-loop systems. Plant-to-plant, distribution centre to store and back, or any lane where you control both ends and can guarantee return.
- Automated handling. AS/RS, conveyors and robotic pickers need tolerances measured in millimetres. Wood moves; plastic does not.
- Export by air. Lighter nestable plastic pallets can beat wood on chargeable weight, and skip the phytosanitary paperwork entirely.
- Static shelf-life storage. No mold risk in humid warehousing, no fastener corrosion.
Where plastic quietly loses
This is the part most plastic suppliers leave out.
One-way shipping. If the pallet leaves and does not come back, you have just given away a very expensive platform. On a one-way lane, a Grade B reclaimed wood pallet is the correct answer almost every time.
Point loading and heavy castings. Plastic deflects. Under concentrated loads, and especially at elevated temperature, it creeps. Hardwood does not.
Repairability. A broken deck board on a wood pallet is a four-minute repair. A cracked plastic pallet is scrap or a regrind credit at best.
Cold. Some resins become brittle below freezing. If your yard is outdoors in an Ohio February, ask specifically about impact-modified grades.
Fire loading. Plastic pallets carry a materially higher fire load than wood, and warehouse sprinkler design classifications reflect that. Storing plastic where the sprinkler system was designed for wood is a serious problem — check with your fire engineer before switching a whole fleet.
Types we supply
Nestable
Lightest and cheapest, nests inside itself for return freight and empty storage. Not rackable. Ideal for display shipping and export where the pallet may be discarded.
Stackable
Flat bottom deck, stacks squarely when loaded. General-purpose workhorse for closed loops and floor storage.
Rackable
Reinforced, frequently with steel bar inserts, designed for edge-rack support with a published rated load. Confirm the rating with your rack engineer, and note that plastic racked capacity falls with temperature.
Hygienic / open deck
Open grid decks that drain and dry, for wash-down environments. Solid decks are available for small items and fine powders.
Reconditioned
Used plastic pallets, inspected and cleaned. Substantially cheaper than new and consistent with the reuse logic that runs the rest of this yard.
Making the switch decision honestly
The break-even calculation is simple and almost nobody does it: divide the pallet price by the number of trips you will genuinely get, then add the cost of the trips where it never comes back.
A $45 rackable plastic pallet across 60 verified trips costs $0.75 a trip. The same pallet with a 15% annual loss rate costs closer to $2.10. A $9 reclaimed wood pallet used five times and then recycled costs about $1.80 and carries no capital risk.

The break-even calculation, done properly
This is the calculation that decides the plastic question, and almost nobody does it before buying.
Cost per trip = purchase price ÷ verified trips, plus the cost of trips where it never comes back.
Work an example. A $45 rackable plastic pallet across 60 verified trips is $0.75 a trip — genuinely competitive. The same pallet with a 15% annual loss rate is closer to $2.10 a trip, because you are buying replacements. A $9 reclaimed wood pallet used five times and then sold back as a core costs roughly $1.80 a trip and carries no capital at risk.
The variable that dominates is loss rate, and it is the one people estimate optimistically. If you do not measure it, assume it is higher than you think.

The fire load question, before you switch a fleet
This one is genuinely important and it is routinely missed until an inspection raises it.
Plastic pallets carry a materially higher fire load than wooden ones, and they behave differently under fire — they melt and produce flowing burning material rather than holding shape. Warehouse sprinkler design classifications treat idle plastic pallet storage as a more demanding commodity than idle wood.
A building sprinklered for idle wood pallet storage may not be adequately protected for the same quantity of plastic. The conversation with your fire engineer belongs before the purchase order, not after the first inspection.

What to specify when you do buy plastic
- Type first. Nestable, stackable, rackable or hygienic open-deck. These are different products, not grades of the same one.
- Rated load, in the right mode. Static, dynamic and racked figures differ as much as they do for wood, and plastic racked capacity falls with temperature. Ask for the rating at your actual storage temperature.
- Resin and impact modification. Some resins become brittle below freezing. If pallets live outdoors in an Ohio February, ask specifically.
- Reinforcement. Rackable pallets are frequently steel-reinforced. Confirm whether yours are.
- Deck type. Open grid drains and dries for wash-down; solid deck suits small items and powders.
- Recycled content and regrind route. Both an environmental and an end-of-life value question.

Mistakes we see
Buying plastic for a one-way lane
If the pallet leaves and does not come back, you have given away a very expensive platform. This is the single most common plastic pallet mistake and it is usually irreversible by the time it is noticed.
Switching a fleet without checking sprinkler design
Plastic carries a higher fire load and a more demanding sprinkler classification. Discovering that at an inspection after the purchase is an expensive order of events.
Using a static rating for a racked application
As with wood, static, dynamic and racked capacities are three different numbers. Plastic adds a fourth variable — temperature — because racked capacity falls as it warms.
Assuming plastic is automatically the greener choice
Plastic carries far higher embodied energy per unit and only pays it back over many dozens of verified trips. A reclaimed wood pallet starts life with almost no new embodied carbon at all.
Not planning the end of life
HDPE and PP pallets are regrindable and hold a scrap value, but only if you have an outlet. Establish the regrind route before the fleet reaches end of life rather than after.

Before you ask us
Do plastic pallets need heat treatment for export?
No. ISPM-15 applies only to solid wood packaging. Plastic, metal and engineered wood products are outside the scope entirely, which is one of the main reasons exporters choose them.
Are plastic pallets more sustainable than wood?
Rarely, and only in high-cycle closed loops. Plastic carries far higher embodied energy per unit; it only pays that back over many dozens of verified trips. A reclaimed wood pallet starts its life with almost no new embodied carbon at all.
Can plastic pallets be recycled at end of life?
Yes. HDPE and PP pallets are regrindable and generally hold a scrap value. We can advise on regrind outlets, though we do not process plastic ourselves.
Do you stock plastic pallets or order them in?
We hold limited common stock and source the rest to order, typically within a week. Reconditioned plastic availability moves constantly, so ask rather than assume.
How long do plastic pallets last?
In a well-controlled closed loop, many dozens of trips and often several years. Outside a controlled loop the limiting factor is loss rather than wear, which is why loss rate dominates the economics.
Can plastic pallets be repaired?
Not practically. A cracked plastic pallet is scrap or a regrind credit. This is a genuine advantage of wood, where a broken deck board is a four-minute repair.
Do plastic pallets work in cold storage?
With the right resin, yes. Some standard grades become brittle below freezing, so impact-modified material should be specified for freezer and outdoor Ohio winter use.
Are plastic pallets better for food handling?
For wash-down and direct-contact environments, yes — they can be pressure-washed and sanitised in a way wood cannot. For dry-goods secondary packaging, reclaimed wood is used successfully by most Ohio food manufacturers.
