The standard pallet size in North America is 48″ × 40″ — the GMA pallet, which accounts for roughly a third of all pallets in circulation. Around it sit about twenty secondary footprints, each of which exists because something specific needed to fit: drums, beverage crates, retail aisle ends, European trailers.

Choosing between them is a three-step process. Measure the load. Eliminate overhang. Check what the footprint does to your trailer. Everything below is detail on those three steps.

Lumber is calculated from nominal 5/8" × 3½" deck boards running across the width on 1⅜" × 3½" stringers running the length, with a 3-board bottom deck — the build we run most often. Weight assumes mixed hardwood at roughly 3.7 lb per board foot; softwood lands 15–25% lighter. Ask us for a cut list on anything you intend to order.

Floor counts assume a 630″ × 98″ usable dry-van interior, loaded straight or pinwheeled, whichever fits more. Multiply by achievable stack height for full trailer capacity.

Method

Step one: measure the load, not the pallet

The most expensive assumption in packaging is that your pallet size is correct because it has always been that size. Measure the actual footprint of a full, built load — not the carton, not the spec sheet, the built load with the wrap on it.

If product hangs past the deck edge you are losing compression strength exactly where cartons are strongest. A carton stack carries most of its load in the corners; an unsupported corner is a crushed corner, and it shows up as bottom-layer damage that everybody blames on the carrier.

If the deck extends well past the load you are paying for wood you do not use, carrying weight you do not need and wasting trailer cube on every shipment.

Step two: choose construction, not just dimensions

Two pallets of identical footprint can behave completely differently. The variables that matter:

  • Deck coverage. Seven boards is standard. Small cartons, pails and bagged product need nine or eleven, or they fall through the gaps.
  • Stringer or block. Stringer pallets are cheaper and lighter. Block pallets give true four-way entry and carry more.
  • Entry type. Partial four-way admits forks from all sides but a pallet jack from only two. If your operation runs jacks, this matters daily.
  • Species. Hardwood versus softwood is worth 15–25% in most load modes. See wood species and materials.
  • Grade. Racking needs Grade A. Nothing else does. See pallet grades.

Step three: check the trailer maths

A 53-foot dry van gives roughly 630 inches of usable length and 98 inches of usable width. Two 48-inch dimensions across is 96 inches — a snug fit. That single fact is why the 48×40 became the North American standard, and it is why a footprint that is six inches wider can cost you a whole load per year.

Run your dimensions through the spec bench above. If the floor count changes, so does your annual freight bill.

Step four: know when to stop using standards

If no standard footprint supports your load without overhang or waste, stop trying to make one fit. A custom pallet costs 15–40% more per unit and frequently saves more than that in damage and trailer efficiency. We prototype in 48 hours and the cut list is yours to keep.

What is the standard pallet size?

In North America the standard pallet is 48 inches by 40 inches, known as the GMA pallet after the Grocery Manufacturers Association. It accounts for roughly a third of all pallets in circulation. In Europe the equivalent is the 1200 by 800 millimetre Euro pallet.

How do I choose the right pallet size?

Measure the footprint of a full load, choose the smallest standard size that fully supports it with no overhang, then check how that footprint loads in your trailer. If no standard size fits well, a custom build is usually cheaper than living with the mismatch.

How many pallets fit on a 53-foot trailer?

Twenty-six 48x40 pallets straight-loaded per floor layer, or thirty pinwheeled. Total capacity is that figure multiplied by achievable stack height, typically giving 480 to 560 pallets.

What does a pallet weigh?

A standard 48x40 wood pallet weighs between 38 and 52 pounds. Southern yellow pine sits at the lower end and mixed hardwood or oak at the upper end.

What is the difference between a pallet and a skid?

A pallet has both a top deck and a bottom deck. A skid has only a top deck sitting on runners. Skids are easier to drag and better for machinery mounting, but cannot be handled with a standard pallet jack.
