This page exists because a sustainability figure that cannot be checked eventually becomes a retraction. Below is every number the Repallet Ledger uses, where it comes from, and how uncertain it is — including the one we consider weakest.

The eight numbers behind every figure on this site

CO₂e avoided per reuse

5.2 kg

Basis. Mid-range figure from published wood pallet life-cycle assessments comparing a reused pallet against a newly manufactured equivalent, cradle-to-gate. Covers avoided harvesting, sawmilling, kiln drying, assembly and primary distribution.

Uncertainty. Published values range roughly 4–7 kg depending on species, transport distance and whether end-of-life credits are included. We use the lower-middle of that range deliberately.

Pallet mass — 48×40 GMA

46 lb

Basis. Yard average across mixed hardwood and southern yellow pine reclaimed stock, weighed across inbound loads.

Uncertainty. Individual pallets range 38–52 lb. Hardwood-heavy loads sit above the average.

Board feet per 48×40 pallet

12.3 bf

Basis. Wood volume of a standard build: a seven-board top deck (two 5½″ lead boards, five 3½″ inner boards) and three-board bottom deck at 5/8″ thickness on 40″ lengths, plus three 48″ stringers at 1⅜″ × 3½″. That totals about 1,770 cubic inches, and one board foot is 144 cubic inches.

Uncertainty. Varies ±15% with deck coverage and bottom deck configuration. This figure and the 46 lb mass above are derived from the same volume, so they cannot contradict each other: mixed hardwood at roughly 45 lb/ft³ gives about 3.74 lb per board foot.

Usable board feet per mature tree

Basis. Typical usable yield from one mature plantation-grown softwood, after harvesting and milling losses.

Uncertainty. Highly variable by species, age and site quality; published figures span roughly 150–400 bf. This is the softest number in the model and should be read as illustrative.

New vs reclaimed price gap

Basis. Difference between typical delivered new-build and reclaimed Grade A pricing on our own quotes, averaged across a rolling twelve-month period.

Uncertainty. Lumber markets move weekly. The gap widens when lumber prices rise and narrows when they fall. Treat as indicative rather than as a quote.

Car-mile equivalent

0.40 kg CO₂e per mile

Basis. Approximate tailpipe emissions of an average US passenger car, used only to make the carbon figure legible.

Uncertainty. Fleet averages vary; this is a communication device, not an accounting figure.

Yard reuse rate

94% of inbound mass

Basis. Share of inbound tonnage leaving the yard as whole pallets or recovered pallet components, from internal weighbridge and count records.

Uncertainty. Moves seasonally by a few points; wet winter intake reduces recoverable share.

Landfill tonnage

0

Basis. No pallet wood has been disposed of to landfill from this yard in the last three years. Residual material goes to mulch, biomass fuel or scrap steel recovery.

Uncertainty. None — this is a records figure, not an estimate.

Boundaries

What the model excludes, and why

Your freight. Transport emissions depend on your lane length, load factor and equipment. Inserting an average would make the output look more complete and be less true.

Your handling energy. Forklift fuel or electricity, wrapping film, warehouse conditioning. Real, and entirely specific to your building.

Loss rate. Pallets that leave and never return still had to be manufactured. If your loop leaks, your real figure is lower than the ledger shows.

End-of-life credits. We do not claim carbon credit for biomass energy recovery, because the accounting for it is contested and we would rather leave it out than argue about it.

Offsets. We have not bought any, so none appear.

How the calculation runs

Reused pallets per month = monthly volume × reclaimed share. Annual figure = that × 12. From there:

  • CO₂e avoided (t) = annual reuses × 5.2 kg ÷ 1000
  • Landfill diverted (short tons) = annual reuses × pallet mass ÷ 2000
  • Trees = annual reuses × board feet per pallet ÷ 235
  • Dollars saved = annual reuses × (new price − reclaimed price)

No hidden multipliers, no rounding in our favour. You can reproduce every figure the ledger shows with a calculator.

Revision policy

If a coefficient changes, this page changes with it and we say so. If a customer demonstrates that one of these numbers is wrong, we change it — that has happened, and the number went down rather than up.
